How to Choose the Right Wedding Cake

Choosing the right wedding cake can be one of the most delightful decisions throughout the whole wedding planning process. The decision can be however tricky, especially if left at the last minute. By following these easy steps the choice can be made a little bit easier.

1) Start looking for the ideas
Ideally the cake should be ordered six months before the wedding, it is therefore advisable to start considering what you would like soon after you've chosen your reception. Internet and wedding magazines work very well as a source of inspiration. Browse to find the perfect design that matches the theme of your wedding, or get creative and match the cake to the colour scheme of your wedding gown, bridesmaid dresses or the flower arrangements. Bring a colour sample to the bakery for colour coordination and get your cake designer to mix it up and create something original.
At Beach Rotana all our wedding packages are inclusive of wedding cakes, making it easier for you to organize everything in advance.

2) Decide on the type of frosting

Butter cream or fondant? That's the main question. Fondant frosting is the most popular for wedding cakes for being so versatile and for leaving a smooth, clean, almost surreal-like finish to the cake. Butter cream is often much more delicious as it is less sweet and it is perfect for decorations such as a basket weave, swirls, fleur-de-lis, rosettes and swags.

3) Consider the Weather

The season in which the wedding takes place, plays also an important role on the wedding cake choice. During the hot and humid season the heat can cause the cakes to melt. Particular attention should be therefore given to the choice of ingredients. It is advisable to choose fondant frosting instead of butter cream and meringue. Cakes with fondant frosting tend to put up the heat better as they are lower in fat and don’t require refrigeration. However, if you still would like to stick with butter cream iced cake, try it covered with a protective layer of fondant. Overall, it is of good practice to keep the cake in a chilled place until before serving it and keep it away from direct sunlight.

4) Do something different
An alternative to the traditional wedding cake are mini cakes, individual-sized, small, detailed cakes that are served to each one of your guests. The beauty of mini-cakes is that they can be made in a variety of flavours. Cupcakes are often used as an unconventional option to the wedding cake adding a fun and whimsical touch to your wedding reception.
