The Majestic Arjaan by Rotana Hotel in Manama seeks to make every day recycling day and has embarked on an exciting campaign to inspire recycling amongst its employees, as well as set an example of good practice for travellers and businesses that are looking to take steps to reduce their impact on the environment.

Much of the waste created in hotels stems from both food and beverage handling (generating materials such as packaging and food waste, aluminium cans, glass bottles and cooking oils), or from the housekeeping department (creating waste such as cleaning materials and plastic packaging). Besides initiating measures to deal with these issues, such as waste separation, The hotel further reduces waste by running towel and linen reuse programmes.

Guests enjoying the accommodation are invited - at their discretion - to hang their towels back on the rack for reuse, or not to have their bed linen changed every day. This can save enormous quantities of water, energy, detergent and, of course, the packaging that ends up as waste.

What happens when conservation and creativity meet? A kaleidoscope of colours and pure brilliance. That is what we saw at this year’s Recycling Art Competition.

Recycling Competition started in 2013 as one of Majestic Arjaans by Rotana’s Corporate Social Responsibility initiatives to reinforce its commitment towards environmental sustainability. This competition explores the creative potential of recycling hotel items and inspiring others to see the possibility in things that may have otherwise have been thrown away. The artworks have been created with items from Majestic Arjaan by Rotana Hotel.

The colleagues were divided into 4 groups and were asked to prepare an entry for an artworks show using used materials that can be found only in the hotel. All teams presented their amazing designs and the event was a success as their objective in creating awareness was achieved. In addition, the activity has promoted teamwork within the colleagues, time management and challenged their creativity.

“We are committed to reducing waste in communities by increasing recycling. However, we know we cannot do it alone. By working together with other businesses and organizations through initiatives, we are able to have the greatest positive impact,” said Raiz Saban, General Manager at Majestic Arjaan by Rotana. “Recycling campaigns is a great way for our employees to get involved in our recycling program and create lasting habits that will benefit communities well into the future.”
